Why Does My Hot Tub Foam—and How Do I Fix It?
There’s nothing quite like relaxing in your hot tub—until you turn on the jets and suddenly your water looks like a bubble bath! When the jets are turned on, they mix air into the water. If there are oils, lotions, soaps, or other contaminants in the water, the air can create lots of foam. If your hot tub has more foam than usual, don’t worry. Foamy water is a common issue, and in most cases, it can be fixed.

1. Lotions, Makeup, and Body Oils
One of the most common causes of hot tub foam is what we bring into the water with us.
This includes things like:
- Body lotions
- Makeup
- Hair products
- Deodorant
- Natural body oils
All of these things can all build up in your hot tub water. Even if you rinse off before using your hot tub, small amounts of these products can still make their way into the water, either of your person, or your swimwear itself.

2. Soap or Laundry Detergent on Swimwear
Have you ever washed your swimsuit and then noticed extra foam the next time you used the hot tub? Laundry detergent can easily become trapped in swimsuit fabric. When you get into the hot tub, the detergent can rinse out and cause foam—especially once the jets are turned on.
Tip: Wash hot tub swimwear separately and use little to no detergent. Make sure swimsuits are thoroughly rinsed before wearing them in the hot tub.

3. Water That Is Getting Old
The longer your hot tub water stays in the spa, the more dissolved materials can build up. Even with regular chemical treatment, things like body oils, lotions, and other contaminants don’t simply disappear. Eventually, the water can become overloaded.
When this happens, you may notice:
- More foam
- Dull or cloudy water
- Difficulty balancing your water
- Chemicals that don’t seem to work as well as usual
Tip: If your water is getting older and you are constantly fighting foam or water balance problems, it may be time to drain, clean, and refill your hot tub.

4. Low Sanitizer Levels
Your sanitizer—such as chlorine or bromine—helps control bacteria and breaks down contaminants in your hot tub water. If sanitizer levels have been too low, contaminants can build up in the water and contribute to foam and other water problems.
Make sure you are testing your water regularly and keeping your sanitizer within the recommended range for your hot tub.

5. Dirty or Tired Filters
Your hot tub filters work hard to trap oils, debris, and other contaminants. If they are dirty, they may not be able to do their job properly. A dirty filter can allow contaminants to remain in the water, which may contribute to foaming and cloudy water.
Tip: Rinse your filters regularly and give them a proper deep cleaning as recommended. If your filters are old or damaged, replacing them may help improve your water quality.

How Do I Get Rid of Hot Tub Foam?
The best solution depends on what is causing the foam.
For Small Amounts of Foam
If the foam is minor and your water is otherwise balanced, you may be able to:
- Test and balance your water.
- Make sure your sanitizer level is correct.
- Clean your filters.
- Use a spa foam-reducing product if needed.
A foam reducer like SpaGuard AntiFoam or Dazzle Defoamer can help quickly knock down visible foam, but it is important to remember that it is usually a temporary solution. If the cause of the foam is still in the water, it may come back. CLICK HERE to shop online for foam reduction products.
For Heavy or Constant Foam
If the foam keeps returning, gets worse when the jets are turned on, or your water is also cloudy or difficult to balance, there may simply be too much buildup in the water.
In many cases, the easiest solution is to:
- Drain the hot tub
- Clean the shell
- Clean or replace the filters if needed
- Refill with fresh water
- Balance the water properly before using
Sometimes, starting fresh is easier—and less expensive—than continuing to add chemicals to water that is already overloaded.

Can I Prevent Hot Tub Foam?
Yes! A few simple habits can help keep foam from becoming a problem:
- Shower before using the hot tub.
- Avoid entering the water with lotions, makeup, or hair products.
- Make sure swimsuits are thoroughly rinsed and free from laundry detergent.
- Test your water regularly.
- Keep sanitizer and water balance levels where they should be.
- Clean your filters regularly.
- Change your hot tub water when it becomes difficult to maintain.
