When Is the Best Time to Drain and Refill a Hot Tub in Winnipeg Before Winter?
For hot tub owners in Winnipeg, timing your fall water change is an important part of getting your spa ready for the long Manitoba winter.
While hot tubs generally benefit from regular draining and refilling throughout the year, Winnipeg’s freezing temperatures make winter water changes impractical—and potentially risky. Once temperatures consistently drop below freezing, draining a hot tub can expose the plumbing and internal components to freezing conditions.
So, when is the best time to drain and refill your hot tub before winter?
Why Timing Matters in Winnipeg
During the warmer months, we generally recommend draining and refilling your hot tub approximately every three months when possible. Fresh water makes it easier to maintain proper water chemistry and can reduce the amount of time and money spent managing difficult-to-balance water.
Winter is different. Once Manitoba temperatures begin dropping below 0°C, draining your hot tub becomes much more complicated. Any water left behind in plumbing, pumps, heaters, or other components can freeze and potentially cause expensive damage.
Because of this, we recommend completing your final fall drain and refill as close to the end of fall as possible, while temperatures still allow for a safe water change.

What Month Should You Drain and Refill Your Hot Tub in Winnipeg?
There isn’t one exact date that works every year because Winnipeg weather can vary considerably from one fall to the next.
A good rule of thumb is:
- September: A good time for a water change if your regular maintenance schedule calls for one.
- October: Often an excellent month for your final major drain and refill before winter.
- Late October to early November: Typically, a great window for the last water change, provided temperatures remain above freezing. This gives the water a good fresh start right before winter!
- November and beyond: Use caution. If temperatures are consistently at or below freezing, avoid draining and refilling unless you’re working with a professional who can safely manage the process.
What Temperature Is Safe for a Drain and Refill?
For a routine drain and refill, Aqua-Tech recommends choosing a day when the temperature is above 0°C (32°F).
This is particularly important in Winnipeg. You don’t want to empty your spa only to have water remaining in the plumbing freeze while you’re trying to complete the refill.

Ideally, choose a day with:
- Temperatures comfortably above freezing
- Enough daylight to complete the job
- No immediate forecast for freezing temperatures
- Enough time to refill the spa, restart it, and confirm that everything is operating properly
It’s also smart to avoid leaving a drained hot tub sitting empty for longer than necessary!
Getting ready to drain and refill?
We recommend always using a product that will clean out the plumbing before draining. Products like Swirl Away or Cleanse and Drain will purge the plumbing of buildup that accumulates over time. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean that its not there! Use every three months for optimal sanitation in your hot tub plumbing.
