Have you ever wondered what happens to your pool water as it sits under the ice all winter?
As the temperature drops in the fall, your pool water gets colder, and the water near the surface eventually gets close to freezing. When it reaches the freezing point, it turns into ice, which acts as a little blanket to slow down how quickly heat escapes from the water underneath. The water underneath the ice is protected from the extreme outdoor temperature by the ice itself, as well as by the large volume of water in the pool.

What about the equipment?
Inside an enclosed pipe or piece of equipment, that expansion has nowhere to go. The resulting pressure can cause pipes, fittings, pumps, heaters, filters and other components to crack. This is why professional pool closing involves so much more than simply putting a cover over the pool!
Aqua-Tech’s winterizing process includes lowering the water as appropriate, flushing the plumbing, and removing water from equipment that could otherwise freeze. The goal is to prevent freezing water from damaging the components that aren’t designed to withstand it. Winter weather can be unpredictable, especially here in Canada! A warm spell may cause some of the ice and snow to melt. Then, when temperatures drop again, the surface can refreeze. This freeze-and-thaw cycle can cause the ice to change throughout the winter. You may notice areas of open water, thinner ice, thicker ice, or changes in the appearance of your pool cover. This is completely normal. Your pool may look different from one week to the next, and that does not necessarily mean there is a problem.
A properly winterized pool is prepared to handle cold temperatures and freezing conditions. The most important part is making sure the pool was properly closed and winterized before the cold weather arrived.
However, if you notice something unusual, such as:
- A significant drop in the water level
- Damage to the pool cover
- A large amount of water disappearing
- Or something that simply doesn’t look right
…it is always a good idea to contact a pool professional. If you are unsure whether your pool is handling the winter properly or have questions about your pool cover, water level, or winter conditions, the Aqua-Tech team is always happy to help.
