How to Maintain a Spa When You’re Away: A Simple Guide

Keeping a spa in good shape while you’re not around might seem tricky, but with a few straightforward steps, you can ensure it stays in top condition.
Here’s a simple guide to help you manage spa maintenance from afar…

1. Check the Water Level

Make sure the water level is just right. Water that’s too low can introduce air into the pipes and potentially damage the pump. The water line should be touching or just below the spa pillows, covering all the jets. This helps prevent issues and ensures smooth operation.

2. Inspect Spa Equipment and Surroundings

Before anything else, check the area around the spa for any signs of leakage or debris. Running the jets can help you spot any error codes or unusual noises from the pump. Also, verify that the spa is maintaining the temperature set by the owner. It shouldn’t be overheating or losing heat.

3. Test Water Chemistry and Quality

Proper water chemistry is crucial for a well-maintained spa. Start by using BioGuard 5-Way Test Strips which can test for the following:

bioguard 5-way test strips
  • Water Quality: Look for any green or cloudy water. If the water looks clear but has some debris on the surface, skim it off with our recommended Spa Leaf Skimmer.
  • Sanitizer Levels: Ensure that sanitizer levels are within the recommended range. For chlorine, aim for 1-3 ppm (parts per million), and for bromine, aim for 2-8 ppm.
  • pH Levels: The pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6. This balance prevents scaling and damage to the spa’s surfaces.
  • Alkalinity: This should be between 100-130 ppm to avoid equipment damage.

If testing seems overwhelming, Aqua-Tech customers can bring their water to us for testing and advice…OR, send a test strip to watertesting@aqua-tech.ca

Check with the spa owner for any specific preferences or additional chemicals they might use.

4. Clean the Filters

Filters play a crucial role in keeping the water clear.

Here’s how to clean them:

  • Locate the filter housing and carefully remove the filter.
  • Rinse the filter with a garden hose or tap. Avoid using a pressure washer as it can damage the filter.
  • If the filter is extremely dirty, consider a chemical cleaning using SpaGuard Filter Brite.
  • After rinsing, place the filter back in the spa.

5. Wipe Down the Waterline

Use a soft cloth and Dazzle Surface Cleanse which is safe for spas to wipe down any discolouration on the waterline. This keeps the spa looking fresh and prevents build-up.

6. Re-Cover and Lock the Spa

Once you’ve finished all the maintenance tasks, cover the spa. Make sure all clasps are closed or locked if available. This helps keep the water temperature steady and prevents debris from getting in.
