Excessive Sanitizer (Bromine and Chlorine) in Hot Tubs

We are often asked what is the most important thing to take care of in your hot tub…. the answer is easy: sanitizer – it is the one thing that keeps you and your loved ones safe while having spa fun. Bromine/Chlorine levels are very important to maintain at ideal levels. When bromine/chlorine levels are in the recommended range they kill bacteria very effectively. When bromine/chlorine levels are high, they can cause some issues.

Side Effects of High Hot Tub Sanitizer on your body

When they are too high in a hot tub this can be uncomfortable for hot tub owners to sit in. High bromine/chlorine levels can be very irritating on a person’s skin, eyes and respiratory system. It can cause red itchy skin, red itchy eyes, and effect the lungs in a negative way. People who are more sensitive to bromine/chlorine can almost notice an insistent reaction to a higher level of bromine/chlorine. The ideal range for bromine/chlorine is between 3-5 ppm.

Side Effects of High Hot Tub Sanitizer on your hot tub

The effect that high bromine/chlorine has on hot tub water is that is can degrade surfaces a lot quicker. Exposed surfaces that can degrade quicker with a higher sanitizer level are: pillows, acrylic surfaces, filters, etc. Bromine and chlorine are strong chemical compounds which deteriorate surfaces. Keeping bromine/chlorine levels in range also helps with prolonging the life of equipment on hot tubs. Take a look at your hot tub cover – was the inside black and now it is white and brittle? Double check your sanitizer levels.

Oversanitized spa cover

Uh oh – my test strips shows my chlorine or bromine as too high – what do I do now?

To correct the issue of high bromine/chlorine levels in a hot tub is to not add any more bromine/chlorine until the levels have come down. Chlorine/bromine are difficult and time consuming to chemically remove from the water; so it is best to allow the ‘bank account’ you have built up to come down naturally. In order to speed up this process, you should take the cover of your hot tub. By taking the hot tub cover off this allows the bromine/chlorine to evaporate/escape the hot tub and lower levels. If this is not fast enough you can add water to dilute the high bromine/chlorine level. By diluting the water, this will help lower the bromine/chlorine level to the recommended range. We sometimes also recommend to not add any more oxidizer (shock) to your spa water because oxidizers help maximize chlorine/bromine consumption. Oxidizers also tend to have added sanitizer to help maintain bromine/chlorine in hot tub water.

Whenever you encounter a high bromine or chlorine level, it is also recommended to not add anymore sanitizer – wait for the levels to come down. If the level is not too high, have a hot tub party – let that smelly uncle or the sweaty hockey team come over. Just make sure they bring their own towels!

good question – can you use your test kit and tell me what the reading is or email a photo of the test kit and results to watercare@aqua-tech.ca? It is not about the dose and how much goes it but more what is the residual and reading of what is active in the spa water. The ideal range for most hot tubs is 2-4 ppm of sanitizer.

I’ve read that bromine can be harmful to those with thyroid issues, and absorbs through the skin easily. Are there alternatives to bromine other than chlorine?

Great question! i am not sure about the bromine challenge with thryroid issues – i have not heard of that before – please check with your physician to confirm this is the case. Here in Canada, bromine and chlorine are the only 2 sanitizers approved for use

I had combined or dead chlorine of 15 when I took my water in for testing for my 475 gallon hot tub on a 3 week old fresh fill. They told me to put in 16 oz of chlor shock and for some reason I listened. Now several days later my free chlorine is still of the charts above 20. What should I do?

Thanks for reaching out Jason! Can you tell me exactly what chlorine product you added? They all have very different formulations and very different advice.

I have high levels of PH and ALK on the test strips while no chlorine .
The water is a light green and I was told to add PH down after a water test used that but no effect ?
This morning we had a mustard coloured film on edges of tub .

    Thanks Pete

I accidentally mixed up chemicals and added 270g of granulated chlorine instead of ALK+. My hottub is now SUPER chlorinated. I added some water to dilute and got the ALK and PH balanced, but chlorine is still off the chart. It is safe to sit in?

Hi Riley – this little hiccup can happen to the best of us – so many bottles do look the same. The short answer is likely no – you should not use a spa until the free chlorine reading is 8 ppm or less on your test kit. Dilution is the very best option if you can

I just added chlorine to my hot tub to get it to the proper level, now my sanitizer level is off the chart. What can I do to get the sanitizer level back within range and what can happen with prolonged high sanitizer levels?

thanks for asking! A lot of what to do depends on the product you used. Feel free to let me know that and i can be more specific. We usually advise to start with waiting 24 hours and retesting. Then if the level is still over 8 ppm then add fresh water, run the jets on high speed and if the spa is outside get some sunshine on that hot tub water

I’m lost! Just got my hot tub. I was told to put half bag of shock in so I did but it was half for a pool! It’s still cloudy never smelled bad just cloudy. I have the lid off and added more water. It’s a gl balboa not sure how to even drain it yet! Any suggestions? When can we get back in? It doesn’t smell any different than the hot tubs at my gym but I’m new! Help! I do not have test strips. I never used them before and it was ok but always put the right amount in too!

congrats on the new hot tub! it can feel like there is a lot to learn – where are you located? If you are close to us here in Winnipeg i suggest that we do a full in lab analysis on your water to see the next steps. Pool and hot tub chemicals tend to have very different formulations and you may have to drain and refill the hot tub.
Also, NEVER use the hot tub until you test the water at home and ensure you have an ideal chlorine or bromine level between 3 – 5 ppm – it is the most important thing to stay healthy and comfortable.
Here are the test strips we recommend – the instructions on them are great and they are very easy to use 🙂

When I test the water in my hot tub the ph reading is yellow, do I need to decrease the ph or lower the ph and what do I use to do that. My chlorine levels r way too high also.

Hello . I am using bromine granules in my hot tub but we added some after draining the tub and refilling and now the free chlorine and total bromine is high . How come we are using bromine but the free chlorine is high ? And also why do our bromine tablets not seem to boost the ppm by anything at all ?

    • Aqua Tech

      Reply

      Hi Harrison,
If you are using bromine I would completely ignore the reading you’re getting from the chlorine, you use one or the other! Since you have a sanitizer in there (bromine) it’s just reading as a high sanitizer level under the chlorine.
For the bromine tablets, they’re great for maintaining a level of bromine once established, but it’s a slow release so they wouldn’t necessarily boost the bromine immediately if it’s low, which is when we would use the granules! Add 2-4 tsp of bromine granules when the bromine is low to establish that bromine level in order for the tablets to maintain it. It’s also a great idea to throw the same amount of bromine granules in after you’ve had a lot of people in the tub to help establish that bromine level that has been used up by the heavy bather load. 🙂

    Hello
I just got a 2-4 person portable hot tub and it didnt come with chemicals or chemical instructions the spa lady sold me bromine tablets and ph up and down as well as test strips but im not sure if I have the right stuff. At the moment it is still heating (90 goal is 102) and I have not added anything to the water also my boyfriend is going to make me shut it down when not in use so im going to end up with a tub of cold water being heated maybe once a week for a day or two.
I guess the question is do I add the chemicals when its hot and check levels every week when I turn it on?
I know it will need drained im just not sure how often and if the treated water is safe to drain in the yard.

The best thing would be to bring in a water sample at your earliest convenience so we can test the water and give you specific test results for your specific water type 🙂

      Happy hot tubbing!

Just filled new hot tub with well water used a filter in the hose like we were told. Misread the instructions on the eco one sanitizer/shock then had brown water which cleared up but left brown ring around tub. Now free chlorine is reading way too high. Can I still balance the alkalinity and the ph or should I wait for the free chlorine to come down?

    • Kathi B

      Reply

You are good to balance the total alkalinity immediately. You may have to re-adjust again when the chlorine comes down but alkalinity is an important foundational adjustment so please do that asap 🙂

Hi, I’ve only had the tub for 6 weeks and I’m on it everyday sticking to the guidelines on changing filters, chemical levels and non chlorine shock every week. About 2 weeks ago I got a rash around my waistline, after searching various websites it looks similar to the germ Pseudomonas. I can’t understand how or why this is as all the levels are and have been correct. Im not sure what to do, I didn’t go in for about 5 days while the rash cleared up a bit but as soon as I went back in for 2 days the following couple of days I developed the rash again in different place (near armpits)
Any advice would be amazing thank you

      Hi Chris,
If you are currently using chlorine in the hot tub, switching to bromine may be a good idea! A lot of people with sensitive skin like the way bromine works for them instead of chlorine. If you’re due for a water test that is always a good idea as well, test strips are accurate but bringing in the water once a month to be spun at the water lab is key for water balance, that way we can tell you exact numbers and what to add to balance because low pH and alkalinity can cause discomfort, especially to those with sensitive skin. Otherwise, if you’re having a lot of discomfort and reactions it’s always a good idea to talk with your doctor on allergy testing.

Hi we bought a hot tub about a year or two ago and I have been doing great with it adjusting the levels as needed and adding shock once a week or when getting out of the tub. Normally I add chlorine and this is worked however lately when I have put chlorine in my test strip shows that there is bromine rather than chlorine in the tub. Is this normal?

    • Kathi B

      Reply

It certainly can be. It depends on the test kit you are using. Chlorine and bromine are both ‘halogen’ based sanitizers and so the test can be detecting that

    Hi

I bought a hot tub a week ago, added water and used a test strip to determine how to adjust levels. First few days were fine and test strips were good but then we already started getting foaming issues. My dealer told me to add more bromine and now my test strip has it too high. I also shocked it at same time. I know I need to now let it come down on it’s own, but that did not completely cure the foam problem. Also when I turn yets off it’s cloudy with lots of little white particals. Have I over chemicaled the water to cause this? Any suggestions on how to fix without draining? Thanks
