blb error on Sundance Spa

Otherwise thought of as a 616 error, the blb error is a reminder to change the Clear Ray UV bulb. If you would like to remove the reminder, here are the steps:

1. Ensure your spa is in ‘Standard’ Mode.
2. Then, press the (CYCLE) button three times; The screen will display “U.” At this time the system is ready to accept your changes.
3. Press the select button and it will read “ON”.
4. Press the up or down temperature button until it reads “OFF”.
5. Press the cycle button and it will exit that menu and read CIRC.
6. Press the Display button to get back to the temperature.

I have a Certa Spa, 2015, flashing “b lb”. I have no “cycle” button, no “select” button, and no “Display” button to complete the above steps. Please guide me as to how to perform the steps to get rid of the flashing “b lb”.
    Thank you.

    1. Barbara the blb msg is a warning that your Sundance Certa spa requires maintenance. It is a countdown timer.
Once the duration countdown timer for the CLEARRAY System has
reached zero, you will need to reset it, replace the UV bulb and clean the
      quartz tube.
To reset the duration countdown timer
      1. Press and hold the Jets pump 1 and Cooler button at
the same time for 3 seconds.
      2. Press the Warmer button until the display shows “0.”
      3. If the counter has reached “0”, pressing the Jets pump 1
button will reset the timer. If the timer is not at “0” pressing the
Jets pump 1 will not reset it.
This info is also on page 33 of your Sundance owners manual.
If you require a replacement uv lamp or quartz tube feel free to visit our online store http://www.aqua-tech.ca to check for prices and availability. Click on parts and accessories and then click on the big yellow button Get pricing and availability.

  2. We emptied and changed the clearay bulb even though the replacement code wasn’t on. Refilled the hot tub and it won’t start. It keeps tripping it’s dedictated breaker. Our is s Capri model sundance.

    1. Debbie if the Capri was operating as normal before changing your Clearay lamp I would suggesting checking the area of the lamp box for water leaks. If it is leaking in this area you could be causing a short.

  3. Nigel,
Do I have to drain the Hot Tub to replace this UV ClearRay bulb? Just curious, I got back from deployment and see this code is on the hot tub and of course wifey just used it and didn’t notice it or inform me about it? Thanks.

  4. I have a Sundance Capri spa. I have changed the Clear Ray bulb. I have followed your instructions but the blb is still flashing. Will the bulb operate successfully with this flashing?

    1. Hi Pat. If the ClearRay UV box has the green light and red light on then the bulb is on. If the both lights are off the bulb is in rest mode. Any other combination of lights mean the bulb is bad or burnt out.

Afternoon, Own a Altamar spa for over 10 years. Error code for UV bulb is flashing, but cannot find bulb housing behind access panel. Do all Sundance spas 10 years or older have a UV bulb?

    1. Hi Brian. ClearRay UV became an option on the Altamar spa in 2012. If you have the BLB code flashing it means the circuit board and or topside keypad has been changed or is not the original that came with the spa when it was purchased. If you would like to remove the message on the keypad follow these instructions:

We have a cameo 880 I believe. We changed the bulb but the blb message is still flashing. What should I do?

    1. Hi Trisha. You need to go into the low level programming on your topside keypad and reset the countdown timer for the ClearRay Uv.

  7. We have a 2005 Sundance majestic 880 series and blb is flashing. We ordered a new UV bulb and followed the instructions in the manual but cannot locate the ClearRay box in the front panel? It said we don’t need to drain the spa, but we cannot locate the unit. Any suggestions??

    1. Hi Lynnette. ClearRay Uv did not become stock on Sundance Spas til 2012 so unless someone installed an aftermarket box on your spa you won’t find one there. You can disable the countdown timer at your topside keypad by toggling the timer to OFF. If you have any further questions feel free to chat me back.

  8. My spa was purchasing 2009. I’ve tried the recommendation above to remove the reminder but it continues to flash. What do I do ?

We have a 2006 Altamar 800 series with a “BLB” error? Are the directions for changing the UV bulb for that model the same as for the 2012+ model? And what do you know the type/model number of bulb we need to buy for that model? We are having trouble getting answers from our local Sundance showroom. Thanks.

    1. Hi Jean. That serial number comes up as a 2006 Sundance Altamar. The Altamar did not come with ClearRay until 2012. These are the instructions how to turn the reminder off: Programming the CLEARRAY™ (Ultraviolet) Water
      Purification System
To access the programming options follow the step below.
      • Standard Mode – in this mode, press the (CYCLE) button three
      times;
      • Economy Mode – in this mode, press the (CYCLE) button
seven times to enter the programming mode.
The LCD screen will display “U”. At this time the system is ready to
      accept your changes.
      1. Press the (SELECT) button once. The current status of the
CLEARRAY System appears on the LCD display, either “ON” or “OFF”
      2. Press the (UP) or (DOWN) button to change the status
of the CLEARRAY System from either “ON” to “OFF”

  10. Hi, I have a Majesta Sundance 2009 SPA.
The “blb” error code is on. I did go shoping for a ClearRay bulb but, thank God, did didn’t have any in stock. After reading this, thanks to Nigel, I learn that my SPA doesn’t even have one !

Since this is a second hand house (and SPA), I wasn’t aware of this.
I looked into this a little clossely and I found out my SPA has a “Water Sanitizer”, by Ocean technologies (Ocean SPA System).

I guess all I have to do is to reset the timer for the mantenance of the “ClearRay” bulb (since I don’t have one ? And I guess I must look into the maintenance of the other system (add salt to the Ocean SPA System).

The ClearRay and the Ocean SPA System are two different things and are not related. I’m I correct ?

    Thanks,

    René

  11. Hello. I just replaced the bulb because the bib message came on when I drained and refilled my spa yesterday. I replaced the UV bulb and restarted spa. The red light is on indicating power, but the green light does not come on. Any suggestions? I don’t think I have ever replaced the quartz tube and unfortunately just went through the hassle of draining and refilling spa (not a pop off side which is a paaaaiiiinnn :)). The model is Sundance Edison, purchased maybe 2 years ago. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

    1. Hello Derrith. If the spa was built August 2016 or later a green and red light indicates normal operation, no lights indicate unit is off, single red light indicates a burnt out bulb. If you just changed the bulb I would suggest you either have a bad connection, bad bulb and or incorrect bulb. I’ve attached a purchase link for the factory ClearRay bulb that fits your model. It is in stock and would ship today: https://shop.aqua-tech.ca/collections/hot-tub-parts-sundance-spas-clear-ray-uv/products/sundance-spas-jacuzzi-clearray-bulb-pn-6472-841

  12. Thank you for your quick response, Nigel! My spa was built in 2017 so the green would indicate it’s functioning propertly. I actually took it apart again, re-installed the bulb and although the green light did not turn on…I did peek inside and the bulb is definitely lit, so I think maybe the green light is just “broken”. Could that be possible? I bought the bulb from the store where I purchased the spa and they only carry Sundance so I think it’s compatible. Also, would the green light ALWAYS be on, or only at times when the spa is performing a certain function?

Thanks again and I will definitely save this link and order a bulb for next year. It was super expensive at my store. However, this link takes me to your Canadian “store”, I think. The price appears in CAD, then changes immediately to US, but afer put in my car, it shows CAD. Maybe it changes to US once my address goes in?

    Derrith

    1. Hi Derrith. Sounds like the green indicator light is burnt out. The green light would be on when the circulation pump is running on low speed. The light would go out if the circulation pump is turned onto hi speed. On our store there is a button near the top right hand side of the page. You can toggle from Canadian funds to US funds with that button. We also have the complete ClearRay units available complete with new quartz sleeve and bulb. They are $599.00 if you ever need one.

  13. We have a three year old Sundance Edison model SN100618091.
The water has turned cloudy and I have not been able to clear it up.
It has never indicated that a new UV bulb was needed. I have looked in the manual and shows that it can be set for Clearray or O3. It was set to O3. Does this mean that the Clearray UV was never used and why is there a choice.

    1. O3 is ozone Floyd. If your water is cloudy you should definitely get a sample down to your local hot tub store to have the water tested. If the water has been in the spa for 3 months or more I would drain and refill it and replace the filter.

  14. I have replaced the clear ray bulb and it is working. Both red and green lights are on and the blb is no longer flashing. The exterior light (Sundance) is still red and has not changed back to white. I also followed the steps to turn off the countdown and set it to off but the exterior light remains red. Any suggestions?

    1. Holly, typically there is an error code displayed on the topside control panel associated with the red light. What is your error code?

  15. Hi..I have a 2006 Sundance Cameo indicating it needs a new UV Bub..However, I have removed all 3 front panels and cannot find the square box to replace the bulb that the videos show..do you think you can direct me to where it may be located..Serial # is OCA3850-100220687-0306 Any help you can give me would be appreciated

    1. Hi Michael. The 2006 Cameo did not come with a ClearRay Uv system. Unless you had it added aftermarket you won’t have one. You can simply toggle the Uv counter to off or to ozone through your topside control panel to remove the blb code.

  16. Thanks for you response..I did follow your directions to turn the U Counter to off, but the blb still flashes on the display board….is there anything else you can suggest..Thanks for your time

    1. 12.8 Programming the CLEARRAY™ (Ultraviolet) Water

      times;
      • Economy Mode – in this mode, press the (CYCLE) button
seven times to enter the programming mode.
The LCD screen will display “U”. At this time the system is ready to
      accept your changes.

      2. Press the (UP) or (DOWN) button to change the status
of the CLEARRAY System from either “ON” to “OFF”.

  17. That worked perfectly.. I had to turn the U off in both the standard and economy modes..Thanks a million for all your help and fast response!!!

  18. SOME HOW I LUCKED INTO YOU WEBSITE TODAY, AND FOUND THE ANSWER TO SOMETHING THAT HAS BUGGED ME FOR TWO DAYS, I HAVE A SUNDANCE 850 SERIES OPTIMA SPA, MFG. DATE 12-03, HAVE HAD FOR 15 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER SEEN THE CODE blb. SAW THE SAME QUESTION ON YOUR WEBSITE, AND HOW TO FIX IT. WONDERING IF MY SPA HAS A UV LIGHT. ? I HAVE NEVER NOTICED IT….. THANKS FOR ANY HELP…….

    1. John, the 2003 Optima never came with a ClearRay Uv so unless you had someone come in to install one aftermarket you will not have one on your spa. Simply toggle that function to Off or to ozone on your topside control panel.

  19. SINCE I SENT THE ABOVE MESSAGE, I FOUND OUT SOMETHING. THOUGHT MY TUT HAD TO BE IN THE STANDARD MODE FOR THE AUTO FILTER SYSTEM TO WORK. I FOUND THAT IF I PUT IT IN THE ECONOMY MODE, AND PRESS CYCLE, UP COMES THE AUTO SYSTEM, READY TO PROGRAM THE 4 FILTER TIMES. THE BOOK SAYS THE TUB HAS TO BE IN THE STANDARD MODE FOR THE AUTO.CIRCULATION SYSTEM TO WORK.. I GUESS I WILL FIND OUT AT 2. 00 PM WHEN IT IS SET TO CYCLE. DOES THIS MEAN IT WILL FUNCTION IN ECONOMY MODE INSTEAD OF STANDARD MODE. STILL WONDERING ABOUT THE SMALL CIRCULATION PUMP. THAT IS CONNECTED TO THE HEATER, AND WHAT FUNCTION IT HAS…..THANKS

    1. John this is from page 15 of your 2003 Sundance Portofino Tango owners manual. Perhaps it will clear things up for you:
Your spa includes a 24-hour circulation pump which filters the
water continuously while using less energy than a common 100 watt
light bulb! The circulation pump draws water through the short side
of the double-ended filter cartridge and effectively removes small
debris in your spa. Note: the 24-hour circulation pump system also
supplies heated water to the spa when the heater turns on. This
features cannot be altered or disabled.
The control system activates a programmable “standard” or
“economy” skimming/heating cycle to remove larger debris missed
by the 24-hour circulation pump filtration system. These cycles
utilize pump#1 and the larger filter cartridge end to quickly clear
“skim” the water of large debris and minimize their “bathtub ring”
effect. Apart from their skimming benefit, each mode also effects
the operation of your spa’s heater. Refer to sections 9.8 and 9.9
      below for additional information.
      9.8 Standard Skimming/Heating Modes (F0 – F3)
Standard skimming/heating modes are typically selected by customers
in cold climates where heatup times are extended due to lower
ambient temperatures. In these modes, the water temperature is
regulated by the set temperature, 24-hour circulation pump, and
heater which turns on as needed. After the programmed set temperature
is reached, the heater turns off and the circulation pump
continues to operate 24-hours to filter and clean your spa.
      9.9 Economy Skimming/Heating Modes (F4 – F6)
Economy skimming/heating modes are typically selected by customers
in warm climates where heatup times are minimized due to
higher ambient temperatures. In these modes, the water temperature
is regulated by the set temperature, 24-hour circulation pump,
and heater only while a programmed filter cycle is running (unless in
summer logic; see section 11.1, page 24). Note: these modes
consume far less energy than standard modes F0-F3 outlined

  20. HELLO NIGEL. HAVE A QUESTION, TH HIGH SPEED ON MY NO. 1 PUMP DOES NOT WORK. NORMALLY, I DEPRESS THE PAD TO ACTIVATE THE PUMP ON HIGH, AND THEN PRESS AGAIN TO MOVE TO LOWER SPEED.HAD A NEW CONTROL BOARD PUT IN MY SUNDANCE OPTIMA SPA. MFG. DATE 12 03 SOME TIME AGO, AND IT SEEMS LIKE THE PUMP NEVER WORKED CORRECTLY AFTER THAT. I FOUND OUT THE CERTIFIED SUNDANCE TECH. FROM

    1. Hi John. Sounds like the jumpers are set incorrect on the new board. What is the part number of the new board you purchased?

  21. We have a 2017 Constance. The blb was flashing so cleaned out the hot tub, changed light, cleaned quartz, and now it’s not working. The breaker keeps shifting out. We opened back up and it was wet inside so now we are drying everything out. Will the drying out fix the problem? If we need to take out the quartz, does the hot tub need to be drained again? Thanks.

    1. If the quartz tube has a crack you will need to replace it Cheryl. The spa needs to be empty to replace it.

  22. I just replaced my uv bulb on a 2016 Sundance Denali and both red and green indicator lights are not working on the clearray unit. Wondering why? Wonder if it could be something I’m overlooking? the connector seems engaged, power is on and jets working. I wonder if lights would be off if bulb is bad? I tried the old bulb too, and lights are off with it as well.

    1. Cynthia both lights are off indicates that the system is off. The system will only be on during a regular filter cycle or if the spa turns on to heat the spa.

  23. Nigel, We have a 2017 Sundance Cameo 880. Our breaker is tripping and we cannot power on the hot tub. With a process of elimination I can get the breaker to turn on if the J56 (Clearray) is unplugged. There was a small amount of water leaking from the ClearRay unit. I removed the bulb, dried off the electrical components and am still having the same problem. Should I start with a bulb replacement or what would be my next step? Also, the bulb was replaced 6-8 months ago.

  24. Hi, I have a 2003 Palermo sweetwater spa. We are the second owners. The blb error code is flashing. In reading through previous posts, I now believe that I do not need to replace a uv bulb, but rather reset my countdown timer. My button choices are: light, jets 1, jets 2, cooler and warmer ( from left to right) can you offer any suggestions? Thank you

  25. Katherine de Quilettes

I have a Sundance Maxxus (2008) that has the blb code that’s been alternating with the temperature on my display screen. Now the spa won’t heat up higher than 97 degrees F. Any ideas?Katherine
