Hi Doug. Make sure you water is at operating level and your pump has a full prime. If this all checks out completely cut power to the heater and then re-apply power to the heater. Wait to see if it starts up as normal. If it goes into service heater again you could check your filters to see if they need cleaning. You could run the system for a brief period ie 10min without the filters to see if the heater operates normally. If it does than that could be a sign that the filters need cleaning. If the filters check out ok and the heater still shows service heater you could open the heater cabinet and look for a fault light on the bottom of the control board. There are several fault lights on the bottom of the control board that could light up. PS stands for pressure switch, SFS stands for stack flue sensor, AFS stands for air flow switch, HLS stands for hi limit sensor, AGS stands for automatic gas switch. If all else fails contact our Service Support Desk to book a diagnostic and repair of your Sta-Rite Maxetherm heater.
