Pool heater won’t turn on

Hello, my heater didn’t turn on when I opened the pool. It is a Sta-rite from around 2002, natural gas. Nothing shows up on panel, no lights or warnings, just blank.

Tony first open up the two halves that enclose the heater. Inspect for rodent infestation and or broken wires/parts. We’ve found this to be the case on several installs in this region.

If things check out with the wires and nothing looks amiss next you want to check for proper voltage where the power comes into the junction box of the Maxetherm and also check your main glass fuse in the same junction box. Make sure the filiment in the fuse is not broken. Check the fuse for continuity if you have a multimeter.

If all else fails contact your local Pentair Svc support desk to book a diagnostic and repair of your Maxetherm heater.

There doesnt appear to be anything other than the wires in the junction box. Do you mean the glass fuse on the board?

Tony there is a glass fuse inside the junction box where the power feed wires come in. This is the fuse we are referring to.

I just noticed one of the yellow wires ripped apart in the top part so I think that’s the problem. Any advice for replacing/taping together or need to replace entire set of wires?

If you only have one wire break Tony you should be ok to splice it. If you have more then a couple you may want to consider replacing the wiring harness depending how severe the damage is. Inspect all wires and connections before trying to power up again. If all else fails contact our Service Support Desk to book a diagnostic and repair of your Maxetherm heater.

Do you think it’s ok to use a marrette cap instead of splicing and soldering together?

It’s one of four small yellow wires.

Tony the preferred method of repair would be replacing wire to wire ie harness to connector etc. 2nd choice would be a hard splice with a heatshrink covering to protect from any referred heat. Hello , I have Sta-Rite 200 Max-E-Therm Pool Heater – 200K Btu – Natural Gas
Heater will not ignite. I can smell gas. There are no error codes. LED board seems to boot up appropriately with 128, then r09.
I replaced the thermistor, I replaced the igniter, I replaced the stack flue sensor. Fan blows when trying to ignite, however , no ignition. Also cleaned filter, checked gas pressure, both were OK.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a bad HSI or a full combustion chamber James.
