Crys, first make sure your ball valves at the pool equipment are turned off ie the valve in front of the pool pump and the valve after the heater before returning to the pool return jet. These valves could be near your pool skimmer and return as well.
Alternatively you could plug off the hole in your skimmer and your pool return with a rubber expandable plug.
Once you have done this and the warmer weather has arrived it will be safe to fill your pool up with your garden hose 3/4 of the way up the skimmer.
