FL1 error code

We have a Sundance Hawthrone 680 series. I think it’s a 2011 or 2012 model. We have been having some trouble with our hot tub. Every couple of days it seems to give us an error code FL1 and begins losing heat. Pump 1 will no longer work, only pump 2 will circulate. This will continue for a few hours and then eventually pump 1 will turn back on, heat up and be back to normal for a day or two. This is concerning because sometimes the heat has gone done to 80, but again the hot tub usually fixes itself. Sometimes we will turn off the power breaker and this will fix the problem. When I tried resetting the hot tub to the factory settings by turning off the power for 5 minutes. The numbers 599 flashed on the screen and then it just showed the temperature we had the hot tub set at. We have just replaced the filters with brand new filters. I also had the water tested and have balanced it. Do you have any other suggestions I could try to fix this problem? Thanks for your support.

  1. Hey Lindsey. When you power cycle your spa the topside control displays your PWA eprom revision which would be 599 and then the topside will revert to the current temperature that your temp sensor is reading.
The problem sounds like the pump is shutting down, either it is thermal overloading, even though it is cold outside, but could be that it is just a faulty pump (thermal overload). This will cause an FL1, that is the key to pump direction.
You could quickly place your hand on the pump motor next time the topside displays FL1, you might feel that it is extremely hot or if warm, but again bad pump.
A more technical way to confirm a bad pump would be to check for voltage with your multimeter at Jet 1 the next time the topside displays FL1 but you would want to do this with the pump protected from cooling as if it is overloading it may cool quickly if you expose it to more cool ambient air. If you have voltage there then the pump could be the issue. Hope this helps you out tonite. Fl 1 error code & heat down to 87°

    Filter cleaned as instructed
Used the hose to burp the line as instructed
    Still flashing the same code
Turned off 3rd time hoping it will reset
All the while jets all work but the waterfoutain is not.

    1. Belynda if you have water movement from the jet pumps but the water fountain has no water movement that means your circ pump has either stopped priming, stopped working or is plugged. If you have exhausted all efforts to release any air locks and have tried to run the spa without your filter you could check for proper voltage on the PWA at your circ pump test points. If you have proper voltage there testing with your multimeter it means voltage is getting to the circ pump but it is not running. You can put your hand on the pump and feel the temperature of the motor. If it is very hot to the touch it could be plugged up or seized. If you have voltage at those points on the PWA and the pump is cold it could be a bad pump. If you don’t have voltage at the test points on the PWA you could have a bad PWA. Sometimes debris can get past the filter and plug up the circ pump and restrict flow and in some cases damage the pump. If after your testing you find a bad circ pump or PWA reach out to me again with the model and date built of your spa or the serial number and I can direct a product link your way for convenience and purchase of these items at good prices. Good luck today and please let me know if I can help further.

  3. I have 780 series Hamilton. Do I need to drain the pool to replace the flow switch and heater/circulation pump?

    1. Hi Michael. It depends what year the Hamilton was built. There was a revision change in circulation pump and flow switch on the Hamilton. Can you look at the id label and let me know what date the spa was built or send me your 9 digit serial number which can also be found on the id label and I can look up the date built for you and give you an answer to your question. The id label can be found on or near the Sentry Control Box.

  4. I have a 2014 Jacuzzi J315. I get an intermittent FL1 error. I have replaced the filters, flow switch, circulation pump, and waterfall. Everything was working and now I get the intermittent FL1 error code. I can hear the Circ pump trip and start back up. This tripping cycle continues. Please help.

    1. Jayne, make sure your water is touching the bottom of the pillows. Remove your filter briefly ie 10-15min with the circ pump running to see if the FL1 code clears. Sounds like low water level or a dirty filter.

  5. Hi Nigel

I don’t know if anyone is monitoring these feeds anymore but I thought I would send out a message. I have a Jacuzzi Model J-365 LED version. A couple months ago my home had a couple of consecutive power failures and I noticed my Jacuzzi went into watch dog mode but power remained on. Here are the steps and repairs I have done.
First I drained, cleaned and refilled.
Powered back on the system and all seemed fine for an hour or so then the system went back into watch dog mode.
I checked the circ pump terminals for voltage and I did in fact have the specified voltage but the pump was hot to the touch.
I purchased and installed a new circ pump. While I was at it I also replaced my flow switch in addition to me water temp sensor in the tub as I wanted to refresh the system.
I purchased and replaced filters too. I primed the system to remove all air lock potentials as specified in many other forums.
Here’s the issue I have now. If I turn pump one on I get 3 flashing fl1 errors until water begins to flow through the switch.
If I have no pumps on the 24hr circ pump is no longer activated. If I turn the heater to a temp that will activate the circ pump I get 3 flashing FL1 errors but the circ pump does in fact come on and heat the tub to desired temp. I have purged the system several times, checked all lines and connections etc etc but no matter what the FL1 error still shows. My thought is that I have a bad circuit board as the pump does in fact activate with the heater. My understanding is that that circ pump on my model is to remain active 24/7 as it also aides with the filtration? To make matters worse I reached out for advice from another person and they insisted it was my new flow switch so I purchased and installed another. I don’t want to keep purchasing parts over again hunting for the ghost. Any advice you can give would be helpful, I have tried to find any service people in my area but no one is really available and seems disinterested in trying to fix my hot tub.

    Thanks for your time
    Vincent

    1. If the connection is good from the flow switch to the board and your filter is clean and there is no blockage you may have a bad board Vincent. I would try running the spa briefly without a filter to see if the FLO msg goes away and the spa circulates and heats as normal ie 15-20min. What is the part number of your board?
