Never will I ever vacuum my pool again said this homeowner. I am retired and I want my pool to be nothing but therapy for my wife and fun for my 13 grandchildren. He asked and we replied with this backyard designed for form and function.
The existing pool was approximately 25 years old. The homeowners had lived on the property for years and had the pool installed. The existing pool was a 20ft x 40ft Rectangle, with 2ft radius corners, and a fiberglass step extending out of the shallow end. The pool had a 4ft – 5ft perimeter of exposed aggregate concrete. The homeowner’s main reason for the renovation was they wanted it to have an automatic pool cover, both for ease of use and as a safety feature for their grandchildren.
In order to install the auto cover we first had to remove the radius corners, and install new steel wall sections to make the pool a rectangle with 90 degree corners. We installed full 20ft wide step inside the pool. We installed an in-wall ladder with handrails to allow for deep end egress that would not interfere with the auto cover. We excavated, and re shaped the pool floor in the deep end to accommodate the new rectangular shape. Two large pool lights were installed on the one 40ft length of the pool to provide illumination.
We formed and poured a large architectural concrete patio area around the pool, tying it into the existing raised paver deck area and pool level pool house at the deep end side of the pool. For this part of the renovation we poured to concrete steps to access the raised deck area, and we also installed 2 large deck drains to keep water from gathering on the concrete deck around the pool.
As with all pool renovations of this nature we installed a completely new circulation system including a wide mouth skimmer, 3 return jets and new underground lines to the pool equipment.
We also installed 2 multi-coloured LED pool lights on the 40ft wall with the designated light control box located inside the house for ease of access.
